Place: Our most layered category quantifies a city’s physical sense of place. To score a city within our Place category, we evaluate the perceived quality of its natural and builtenvironments. From how often the sun shines to the safety of the streets, several readily measurable, oft-cited factors influence our perceptions.
Product: This is a ranking of the “hardware” of a city—often the most difficult metric for cities to get right. Our product category studies a city’s key institutions, attractions and infrastructure. A city’s infrastructure and institutions shape its identity via the quantity, quality and reputation of these “products.” Expensive and difficult to develop and maintain, exceptional, recognizable products are often found only in large, cosmopolitan cities.
People: The more diverse a city’s population, the more it produces global ideas… on a local scale. Human capital is often a city’s most valuable resource. To evaluate the relative strength of human capital from one city to the next, we consider the diversity of the city’s population —something of proven importance when it comes to attracting talent.
Prosperity: A well-paid, economically secure citizenry facilitates stewardship and innovation. In general, beliefs about the wealth and prosperity of a city are shaped by statistics such as the income of citizens, the standard of living and the presence or absence of large, recognizable corporations—despite the fact that start-ups and innovation increasingly drive a city’s development and economic growth.
Programming: This category measures the experiential pillars of a great visit: food, shows, shopping and nightlife. If our Product category is the “hardware” of cities and destinations, the mosaic of cultural programming and lifestyle experiences they offer is the “software” that makes them run. While such programming initiatives are individually insignificant, their sum fosters a community’s connection to place.
Promotion: A city’s ability to tell its story (and help others do the same) depends on how it incentivizes and rewards sharing of experiences by locals and visitors. The number and frequency of media coverage, online articles, references and place-based recommendations influence our perception of cities, whether the news is good or bad. Today, residents, businesses and visitors promote a city to the world more than city marketers or chambers of commerce. Resonance ranks a city’s Promotion performance based on the number of stories, references and recommendations shared online about that city.

De Moulin Rouge en Le Lido zijn beroemde nachtclubs in Parijs, waar veel shows plaatsvinden. Het populaire uitgaansleven van de Parijse jongeren concentreert zich in de straten ten oosten en noordoosten van Place de la Bastille. In Parijs vind je zo’n 8.000 restaurants. De lopen uiteen van tien driesterrenrestaurants tot vele bistro’s en cafés waar je een menu kan bestellen. Vrijwel alle keukens van de wereld zijn in Parijs vertegenwoordigd. Er zijn ook vele horecagelegenheden met terras.

De gebouwen die het meest worden geassocieerd met New York, zijn de wolkenkrabbers. De bebouwing van de stad veranderde al in de 19e eeuw van traditionele Europese laagbouw naar hoogbouw in de zakendistricten. In New York bevinden zich talloze kleine en grote musea en galeries. Het Metropolitan Museum of Art (The Met), opgericht in 1870, is een van de grootste en belangrijkste kunstmusea ter wereld.

De komst van elektrische verlichting leidde tot omvangrijke nieuwe theaterproducties. In de jaren 80 van de negentiende eeuw ontwikkelde zich in de theaters op Broadway en langs 42nd Street een nieuw soort voorstelling die bekend werd als de Broadway-musical.

In Londen staan veel voorname gebouwen. Een icoon voor Londen is de klokkentoren van de Big Ben, onderdeel van het Palace of Westminster, ook wel bekend als Houses of Parliament.

Een historische plek is de Tower of London, die ondanks zijn naam geen toren is maar een grote vesting, waarvan de oudste delen stammen uit de elfde eeuw, niet lang na de Normandische invasie. In de geschiedenis fungeerde het bouwwerk onder meer als koninklijk paleis, maar ook als gevangenis waar tegenstanders van de kroon werden vastgehouden. Anno 2020 is het een museum, waar onder meer de Britse kroonjuwelen te bezichtigen zijn. Tower Bridge ligt naast de Tower of London, waaraan de brug ook zijn naam dankt. Dagelijks passeren meer dan 40.000 voetgangers en voertuigen deze brug.[41] Tower Bridge is een van Londens grootste toeristenattracties.

Het paleis Buckingham Palace is de Londense residentie van koningin Elizabeth II en haar echtgenoot prins Philip. In de stad en de nabije omgeving bevindt zich nog een groot aantal andere (voormalige) koninklijke residenties, zoals Frogmore, Hampton Court Palace, Kensington Palace en Windsor Castle.

Het reuzenrad London Eye en The O2 (voorheen Millennium Dome) behoren tot de nieuwste attracties van de stad. Het eerste biedt vanaf maximaal 135 meter een panoramisch uitzicht over de stad, het tweede is een groot evenementencomplex, waar onder andere popconcerten worden gegeven.
