1. Reminiscences of a Stock Operator – Edwin LeFevre (1923)
Edwin Lefèvre (1871–1943) was een Amerikaans journalist, schrijver en staatsman. Lefèvre is het meest bekend geworden door zijn werken over Wall Street en de beurshandel.
Zijn werk Reminiscences of a Stock Operator, geschreven in 1940 als portret van de speculant Jesse Lauriston Livermore, wordt nog steeds beschouwd als verplichte kost voor ieder die in de financiële wereld actief is.
Tussen 1909 en 1913, onder het presidentschap van William Howard Taft, was Lefèvre ambassadeur in verschillende Europese landen.

2. The Big Short: Inside the Doomsday Machine – Michael Lewis (2010)
Flitshandel / The Big Short viel als een bom in de financiële wereld. Binnen een mum van tijd stond de FBI op Wall Street en riep senator John McCain om een onderzoek door het Amerikaanse Congres. Wat maakt Flitshandel zo explosief?

3. Manias, Panics and Crashes: A History of Financial Crises – Charles Kindleberger (1978)
Charles Poor “Charlie” Kindleberger (12 oktober 1910 – 7 juli 2003) was economisch historicus en auteur van meer dan 30 boeken. Hij is door The Economist aangeduid als ‘de meester van het genre’ op het gebied van financiële crisis.
4. A Monetary History of the United States, 1867-1960 – Milton Friedman and Anna Jacobson Schwartz (1963)
Friedman (New York, 31 juli 1912 – San Francisco, 16 november 2006) was economisch adviseur van de Republikeinse Amerikaanse president Ronald Reagan.
Zijn politieke filosofie benadrukte de voordelen van een vrije markt systeem met minimale interventie door de overheid. Hij heeft eens gezegd dat zijn rol in het afschaffen van de dienstplicht in de Verenigde Staten de prestatie is waar hij het meest trots op was.
Zijn steun voor een systeem van vrije schoolkeuze leidde hem er toe “The Friedman Foundation for Educational Choice” op te richten.
In zijn boek uit 1962 Capitalism and Freedom pleitte Friedman voor zaken zoals een vrijwilligersleger, vrij zwevende wisselkoersen, het afschaffen van medische licenties, een negatieve inkomstenbelasting en onderwijsvouchers.

5. Extraordinary Popular Delusions and the Madness of Crowds – Charles Mackay (1841)
In his introduction Mackay writes of “whims and peculiarities,” as if he were referring to fashion or music. He then cites the Crusades and witch hunts as deadly examples of mania and social madness. This fondly familiar classic was the original financial history for broad audiences. The voice is avuncular, the tone gently chiding. Mackay finds our financial faults lie not within our stars but within ourselves.
Still in print, it encourages investors in a solid Victorian mindset to rise above their base nature and be creatures of thought rather than instinctive fear and greed. The quotable line, to use a film reference is: “Men, it has been well said, think in herds; it will be seen that they go mad in herds, while they only recover their senses slowly, and one by one.”

Een onderzoek naar de aard en oorzaken van de rijkdom der naties, of De rijkdom der naties is het magnum opus van Adam Smith (Kirkcaldy, rond 5 juni 1723 – Edinburgh, 17 juli 1790).
Het is gepubliceerd in 1776 aan de vooravond van de Industriële revolutie. In de boeken worden ook de principes van de vrijemarkteconomie voor het eerst systematisch verdedigd. Het bestaat uit vijf boeken en twee delen.
